Sustainability

We aim to be a sustainable caterer and provide a better catering service for people and the planet by measuring, reporting, and reducing our carbon footprint.

We don’t plan on taking a backseat to sustainability, which is why net zero is our priority. We’re committed to being carbon neutral by 2025 and to cutting our greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2045.

Our promise to reduce the environmental impact of operations

To get to net zero, we’ve looked at innovative ways to reduce, rather than offset, our carbon emissions. We have done so by having our near and long-term targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative(SBTi).

A partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the SBTi provides a clearly-defined pathway for organisations to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We are incredibly proud to have our targets vetted by their rigorous process.

Sourcing

We use local suppliers, utilise wonky vegetables and rotate our menus seasonally to make the most of the UK’s best produce.

We also continue to build resilience in our food supplies and deliveries by partnering with local small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This allows us to create shorter supply chains, promote sustainable agriculture practices, and work with organisations that share our environmental and social values.

Helping to tackle food waste

We recognise the connection between food waste and carbon emissions. That’s why we’ve set an ambitious objective to reduce our food waste 50% by 2025 by using digital pre-order and waste tracking technology to minimise food being thrown away.

Recent times have seen food suppliers to schools across the country reporting a huge increase in food waste due to pressure on supply chains – an issue that is unlikely to change soon. We continue to use our WasteWatch technology to capture real-time data, helping kitchen teams find inefficiencies and make positive changes to operating procedures.

We’re committed to social value

As a catering company for schools, we’re committed to making a difference and giving back to our communities. That means employing local people and educating pupils on sustainable food and diets.

Throughout the academic year, we provide chef-delivered workshops that include pizza-making, bread-making and sugar swap classes. We also encourage all our employees to donate food to local food banks and volunteer in the wider community.

To ensure food equity, we provide free school meals and free breakfasts and work to reduce the stigma of free school meals by introducing technology such as School Food United.
